Liquid Crystal Fill Port Design


The fill port was required to allow liquid crystal material to be injected between the glass face plate, (shown on the left) and a thin sheet of transparent mica, (just inside of the face plate).  Since the mica layer could not withstand the force of atmospheric pressure, the liquid crystal needed to be injected while maintaining a vacuum.  The fill port, (located about 3:00 on the face plate) was fabricated from titanium to match the thermal coefficient of expansion with the glass faceplate.   The size and shape of the fill port was important for eliminating cracks and thermal stresses through the filling process.  At the completion of injecting the liquid crystal material, a vacuum tight stainless steel cap was installed.
